The Naked and Famous are a New Zealand indie rock band from Auckland. They formed in 2008 when Thom Powers and Alisa Xayalith recorded two EPs with engineer Aaron Short, a fellow student at Auckland’s MAINZ music college. The EPs were subsequently released on a local independent label and Powers and Xayalith began performing live with Ben Knapp (bass) and Jordan Clark (drums).

In 2009, the group recorded the single All of This. Aaron Short became a performing member of the group and Jesse Wood (drums) and David Beadle (bass) joined the band as fulltime members.

The group then set about recording the single “Young Blood” and their debut album, recording mostly at home and at Auckland studio, The Lab. “Young Blood” debuted on the New Zealand chart at number one in 2010—the first New Zealand artist in three years to do so. The Naked and Famous released their debut studio album, Passive Me, Aggressive You, on 6 September 2010 on their own label, Somewhat Damaged. The album was produced by Thom Powers and Aaron Short and mixed by Billy Bush.

On 6 December 2010, the BBC announced that The Naked and Famous had been nominated for the BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll.

In 2011, the band garnered six nominations at the New Zealand Music Awards for Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Best Group, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Best Alternative Album and the People’s Choice Award. They were also nominated for the NZ On Air Best Music Video and won the MAINZ Best Engineer Award and the MAINZ Best Producer Award.

Teengirl Fantasy is Logan and Nick, two friends at Oberlin College in Ohio. It’s tough to classify Teengirl Fantasy’s music within one genre–both Harmonia and Cece Peniston serve as equal reference points. Teengirl Fantasy’s love of drone, 4/4, and warm gating synths force new classifications of electronic music. Cosmic Disco-Noise, diving videos in reverse, Booty-Pop, and dancing in slow motion could all describe the band’s sound but don’t really make any sense.

Teengirl Fantasy have toured the US coasts opening for acts such as Lucky Dragons, Pictureplane, Dan Deacon, THE GZA, and Blues Control in addition to premiering a video installation/performance with Jacob Ciocci of Paper Rad.

Teengirl Fantasy likes to keep it real for everyone: they support DIY venues with all ages shows, and their live set is constantly evolving without the use of laptops or backing tracks. Fantasize about kissing and holding Teengirl Fantasy.

Kids These Days comes from Chicago but their music comes from everywhere. With horns, a rapper, a blues-rock trio and a female singer, KTD blends a wide range of influences — hip-hop, jazz, soul, blues, and classic rock — into a unique, fresh sound that breaks boundaries while honoring America’s musical heritage.

They have shared the stage with noted hip-hop artists Rhymefest, the Cool Kids, Mic Terror, and Dom Kennedy. Their influences run from the Roots, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix to classic bebop and modern jazz artists such as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Christian McBride, Miguel Zenon, Nicholas Payton, and Roy Hargrove. Trained musicians, they also perform regularly with side projects at the Jazz Showcase, Symphony Center, Ravinia, The Velvet Lounge and the Chicago Jazz Festival.

KTD includes Liam Cunningham on guitar and lead vocals, Lane Beckstrom on bass, Greg Landfair on drums, Macie Stewart on keys, lead vocals, and background vocals,Vic Mensa on rap vocals, Nico Segal on trumpet, and J.P. Floyd on trombone.

KTD’s first project “Hard Times”, which features five original songs, is currently available on iTunes for download (at the low price of $3.99); it was released on June 28th 2011.

Toronto’s Born Ruffians feature Luke LaLonde (vocals/guitar), Mitch DeRosier (bass/vocals), and Steve Hamelin (drums). Formed in 2002, the indie rock trio creates a jaunty mix of shifty guitar riffs and hyper-chic vocals for a Pixies-esque shredded kind of sweetness. An appearance at the annual Pop Montreal festival and U.S. tour dates with Hot Chip and Shy Child coincided with the release of Born Ruffians’ self-titled debut EP for Warp Records in October 2006. The band’s first full-length, Red Yellow & Blue, arrived in spring 2008. They returned with 2010’s Say It, which the band recorded in two weeks with producer Rusty Santos.

After years in the making here at last is Illumination, the fully realised debut album from Melbourne’s favourite psychedelic indie-electronic adventurers Miami Horror. With Illumination, Miami Horror has delivered on two years of teeth-cutting live shows and an ever escalating wave of buzz that’s made the group bonafide blog darlings the world over. But what’s most amazing about the grand arrival of Illumination is that the roots of the record stretch back countless moons to when Miami Horror began as just one synthesizer-obsessed producer huddled over a laptop in a bedroom-come-studio and the album itself just a spark waiting to be lit.

The afore mentioned synth tragic was, and let’s face it still is, electronic young gun Ben Plant, who kick started Miami Horror out of a love of Roland keyboards and French house, landing himself on Pitchfork’s hot-list overnight and copping a barrage of high profile remix requests from the likes of Datarock, PNAU and The Presets.

Yet it was while Ben was punching out 2008’s epochal Bravado EP that Miami Horror took off in a completely new and different direction. Characteristically wanting to flex his creative muscle and avoid the limitations of being stereotyped as simply a dance or electro act, Ben rewired Miami Horror’s genetic makeup, deputising the talents of Josh Moriarty, Aaron Shanahan and Daniel Whitechurch to form a new live band persona of Miami Horror, a whole new beast immeasurably more exciting than before.

“It started out that I didn’t want to have any guitar on the album besides a little funk guitar or disco bass,” Ben grins while explaining the turning point for Miami Horror’s evolution. “But then Josh came in and started playing all these other parts that sounded amazing. Paired with what I was working on, nobody was doing anything like it, so I knew we had to turn those sounds into a live thing and just go wild.”

It worked. Since the switch, Miami Horror has launched into dizzying new stratospheres, their well-polished chops as a group making for some unmissable sets at Australia’s biggest festivals, and that’s not to mention some A-list support slot call ups for everyone from Phoenix, Friendly Fires and La Roux to a hand-picked hook up from Lily Allen.

All this time Ben had been further noodling away at Miami Horror’s long-awaited debut disc and with the vision for a fully-blown and creatively shared band now fulfilled Miami Horror was able to pour all of their energy into Illumination, the record that’s taken Miami Horror years to perfect and Ben a whole lifetime to get right.

Dream-Pop band Machines Are People Too formed in Chattanooga, TN in the sweaty summer months of ’09 when Brian began writing vocals over JJ Clark’s well-produced beats. The two began writing together and performing as Machines Are People Too at monthly dance parties with two keyboards, a laptop, and a microphone. Their self-released DIY EP consisted of 4 songs released only on cassette. Each hand-stamped tape included custom labels and provided you with a tangible alternative to free downloads.
After a year of dancing and playing with DJs, the duo was ready to expand their band and overall sound. Longtime friend, Cain Lassiter, was asked to blow his saxophone on a few tracks and proceeded to bring his other talents to the band. Now playing keys, Cain continues to add innovation to MRP2. Keeping the beat better than any beat machine and filling the gaps with style, drummer, Ivan Garcia became the perfect addition to Machines. The band’s eclectic sound and progressive music creates a live show that leaves no toes untapped and will leave you with no other choice but to let go and dance

Baths is the intricate electronic pop project of Los Angeles-area producer Will Wiesenfeld, also of [Post-Foetus] and Geotic. Growing up in California’s San Fernando Valley, Wiesenfeld began making music at an early age, with his parents enrolling him in music lessons at age four (at his insistence). He began recording his own music in his early teens, but found his true inspiration after discovering Björk’s music. Wiesenfeld taught himself guitar, contra bass, and viola and developed a quirky, layered production style, mixing sounds like clicking pens and running water with electronics and live instruments. His first project — which he began while still in his teens — was [Post-Foetus], but he soon began crafting ambient compositions under the name Geotic, and eventually added the Baths moniker to the fold. Wiesenfeld was also invited by the like-minded producer Daedelus to play at the L.A. venue Low End Theory and became a regular performer at the club. Baths signed to Anticon Records in 2009, and the debut album Cerulean followed in 2010.

Bard and Mustache

Bard and Mustache began as the far-off daydreams of Floridian son-smith and multi-instrumentalist Erin Murphy and NJ-native recording artist / vagabon Greg Bortnick. The two joined overa shared passion for rough-and-ready musicianship and die-hard DIY aesthetics, forming Bard and Mustache on a whim in January 2011 and releasing their first EP, “Falcor’s Burning Belly,” in March of that year.

Toronto’s quirky, high-energy indie rock outfit Tokyo Police Club features vocalist/bassist Dave Monks, keyboardist/vocalist Graham Wright, guitarist/percussionist Josh Hook, and drummer/percussionist Greg Alsop. The band formed in the wake of the breakup of the foursome’s previous project; after taking a break for several months, the musicians regrouped as Tokyo Police Club in 2005. They began performing live that summer, and that fall they played the Montreal Pop Festival, where the audience’s rousing reception convinced the group to make Tokyo Police Club a full-time venture. Monks quit school, and early in 2006 the band signed with local label Paperbag Records and began recording their debut EP, A Lesson in Crime, which was released that spring.

Buoyed by blog and MySpace buzz, Tokyo Police Club embarked on their largest tour yet that fall. Around the same time, A Lesson in Crime was reissued with wider distribution, and 2008 saw the release of the band’s full-length debut, Elephant Shell. By the end of the year, Tokyo Police Club had toured in support of the album and already begun working on a follow-up record, Champ, which they ultimately released in 2010.
